Aquaponic gardening may not be something most people are familiar with but it is an ingenious system revolutionising the way many gardeners are now fertilising their plants.

It uses the waste water from keeping fish and helps to grow beautiful, organic produce.

This Aquaponic Gardening step by step guide is an essential manual detailing everything you could possibly want to know on the subject.

The information within couldn’t come from a better source as it is written by Sylvia Bernstein who is President and Founder of The Aquaponic Source. She also runs the largest online community site devoted to Aquaponic gardening in North America. Here she shares her knowledge with us in this informative guide.

Aquaponics combines aquaculture and hydroponics to produce a super efficient way of keeping fish and growing your own fruit and vegetables.

It is completely organic, uses just a fraction of the water used in regular gardening and involves no weeding, fertilising or digging.

This book guides you through everything you need to know on the subject and the steps you will need to take to create your own Aquaponic system.

It is just right for those looking to become more self sufficient as this system helps you grow bountiful, delicious produce all year round.

Likes

  • Clear and informative and leaves beginners feeling confident enough in the basics to get started.
  • Features helpful pictures and illustrations
  • Once read it is still really useful as a reference.

Dislikes

  • The first part of the book goes into some detail on food production and over fishing in America explaining why aquaponics is useful on a large scale. Whilst pertinent to the subject this is not useful in any way to backyard aquaponic gardeners.
  • The author shares her own opinion of what works but seems to discount other aquaponic methods practised. It is her way or the highway!
  • More story and theory than technical advice.

The book covers the theory and benefits of Aquaponics as well as location and equipment choice, all the living things within the carefully created eco system such as fish, worms, plants etc. and how to bring it all together.

It is a comprehensive manual explaining all the key methods and theories in a clear, simple to understand way that even beginners will understand. That being said, even seasoned aquaponic gardeners can discover the odd useful hint.

Many newcomers have found this book essential reading as it features everything you need to know to get started.

One disadvantage of the book some readers have foreseen is really not the fault of the author or book at all. The subject of aquaponics is still quite new and for many still at the trial and error stage meaning new discoveries and theories are being developed all the time.

This being the case the book could soon end up with out of date information, although revised editions would solve this.

Anyone curious to discover more about the revolutionary world of aquaponics can find all they need to know on Aquaponic Gardening. Read this and teach yourself how to become an ‘aquapon’.
